In most coffee growing regions, women are major contributors to the production of coffee. In addition to duties caring for children and households, they tend the coffee trees and harvest crops by handÉ backbreaking, hard work. While they provide much of the required manual labour, they have little influence in the political and economic decisions in their workplaces, communities and their homes. These women tend to be marginalized, and are often abused or abandoned.
In searching for answers to their problems, women from many remote communities in Peru collected together and came up with the idea of separating their coffee from the rest of production. They have to formed new alliances and created new organizations to produce and distribute their crop. Now Peruvian women participate in decision making in farming techniques, milling, and exporting.
Gaylene Smith of Organic Products Trading Company (OPTCO) has worked with the group in Peru for years. She has helped them improve the quality of their product to the highest standards, and has committed to importing it into North America at the Fair Trade price plus 2 cents per pound. Gaylene foresees the women improving the lives of their children and communities with their newfound economic power.
